Insurance for Maids
Stay covered for slips, stains, and stolen gear with affordable maid insurance
- Covers Broken Items While Cleaning – Protection if you damage furniture or valuables
- Builds Trust With Homeowners – Show proof of coverage and land more cleaning jobs
- Insures Your Gear – Optional coverage for everyday cleaning equipment
Why Do Maids Need Insurance?
Residential cleaning might seem low-risk, but entering clients’ homes involves serious responsibilities. One broken vase or slip on a wet floor could lead to expensive claims — maid service insurance is designed to cover accidents so you don’t have to pay for them out of your own pocket.
If you accidentally damage a client's marble countertop while cleaning
General liability insurance helps pay for repairs or replacement
If a homeowner slips on a wet tile floor right after you finish mopping
General liability insurance can cover medical bills and legal defense
If your staff is accused of theft after a home visit
Janitorial bonds help protect your reputation from employee dishonesty claims
If your cleaning supplies or vacuum are stolen from your vehicle
Tools and equipment coverage can help you replace the gear quickly
How Much Does Maid Insurance Cost?
Maid insurance coverage starts at $39 per month (a small price to pay for big protection!) Our coverage is designed specifically for independent maids and home cleaning companies, so you only pay for what you need.
Want to save more? Choose annual billing to save 12% and lock in coverage for a full year of uninterrupted peace of mind.
“Signing up was easy. It’ll give any client the comfort of knowing that you have coverage.”
Plus, it’s a good, affordable coverage that covers what I need. I definitely recommend it to people—including my son and those in other industries. I tell them to call Insurance Canopy and get covered, because it’s not overly expensive. When other people in the cleaning industry say they’re not insured, I say, “Why? It’s literally $39 per month.”

Recommended Coverage for Maids
We recommend that maids include several different coverages in their maid insurance policy. Our recommended coverages include:
Included
General Liability Coverage
As a professional maid, you often work in clients’ homes, around valuable belongings, delicate surfaces, and unpredictable pets or family members. General liability insurance is your frontline defense against third-party claims for accidental damage or injury.
General liability insurance is designed to cover:
- Medical expenses if someone trips over your supplies or slips on a wet floor
- Legal costs if a client sues over a damaged antique or scratched surface
- Replacement or repair if you accidentally damage furniture, countertops, or appliances
This coverage is often required to work with high-end clients, cleaning agencies, or when offering recurring services in upscale residences. It shows professionalism and helps you clean with confidence.
Add-Ons
Tools and Equipment Insurance
Maids often bring their own cleaning equipment, like vacuums, steamers, or mops, to jobs. This coverage protects the tools that make your job possible. Tools and equipment insurance helps pay for replacements if your gear is damaged, vandalized, or stolen from a client’s home or your vehicle.
Tools and equipment insurance covers:
- Theft from your car, storage, or a client’s property
- Damage while transporting cleaning supplies
- Equipment repairs after accidental drops or power surges
Note: This does not cover items that disappear mysteriously or without a clear explanation.
Workers Compensation
Housekeeping involves repetitive motion, lifting, climbing stairs, and exposure to cleaning chemicals, all of which carry risks. If you employ anyone (even part-time), workers compensation is essential and often legally required.
Workers comp covers:
- Medical care for job-related injuries (like slips, strains, or chemical burns)
- Partial wage replacement while recovering
- Physical therapy or rehabilitation services
- Legal costs if your business faces an injury-related lawsuit
Note: This coverage doesn’t apply to independent contractors or off-the-clock injuries. Failing to carry workers comp when legally required can result in fines, lawsuits, or even being shut down.
Commercial Auto Insurance
Do you drive to clients’ homes with supplies in your car? If so, your personal auto policy likely doesn’t cover accidents or theft during business use. Commercial auto insurance ensures you’re protected on the road.
Commercial auto insurance covers:
- Collision repairs to your vehicle
- Injury or damage caused to others while driving for work
- Theft or vandalism of cleaning equipment stored in your car
Janitorial Bonds
Homeowners want peace of mind when letting someone into their personal space. A janitorial bond protects your clients in case an employee is accused of stealing something during a visit.
Here’s how it works:
- A client claims theft during or after a service
- The bond provider investigates
- If valid, the client gets compensated
- Your business repays the bond company
Bonding builds trust with clients, especially for recurring jobs. It’s often required when subcontracting for agencies.
Additional Insureds
Some homeowners associations (HOAs) or property managers may require you to be listed on your policy as an additional insured (AI). This means your liability policy protects them if a claim arises from your work on their property.
Why add an AI?
- Required in many residential cleaning contracts
- Helps win larger or luxury home jobs
- Simple and affordable to add ($10 per year, per AI)
Cyber Liability Insurance
Even solo housekeepers can be hit with unexpected digital disasters. Cyber liability insurance gives peace of mind — no tech degree required.
If you accept digital payments, use a booking app, or store client info on your phone or laptop, you could be vulnerable to a data breach or cyberattack.
Cyber insurance can cover:
- Data recovery and security fixes
- Notification and credit monitoring for affected clients
- Ransom demands if you’re hacked
- Legal and settlement costs
What’s Not Covered with Maid Service Insurance?
When considering the best maid insurance, it’s important to be aware of the following exclusions.
- Water removal/extraction, mold remediation, fire, smoke, flood or other disaster services
- Operations involving construction debris removal
- Construction, maintenance, repair, renovation, or property preservation service
- Cleaning of the exterior of buildings and/or power washing other than from the ground level
- Chimney cleaning

Common Questions About Maid Insurance Coverage
What activities aren’t covered by maid service insurance?
Maid service insurance doesn’t cover disaster-related cleanup (such as water, mold, fire, or flood), construction or renovation work, debris removal, exterior cleaning above ground level, and chimney services.
Do I need maid insurance if I work alone?
Yes. Even solo maids face risks like accidental damage, slip-and-fall injuries, or equipment theft. Maid insurance protects you from unexpected costs that could otherwise wipe out your business. Plus, some clients require proof of insurance before hiring.
Is my maid insurance policy effective immediately?
Yes. Once you complete your payment, your coverage starts right away. No waiting periods, so you’re protected from day one.
Can I cancel my maid insurance policy at any time?
Yes, you can cancel your insurance policy anytime through your customer dashboard. However, once your coverage starts, the policy is usually fully earned and non-refundable. Always check your specific policy terms before canceling.
How do I file a maid business claim?
It’s simple. Log in to your Insurance Canopy account and select “File a Claim.” Provide the details, and a claims adjuster will contact you if they need more information. They’ll handle the rest and keep you updated until the claim is resolved.
How do I renew my maid insurance policy?
Your policy renews automatically to avoid any coverage gaps. You’ll get email reminders before renewal, but you can also choose to renew manually.
What happens if I have a maid service claim after I cancel my insurnace?
If you file a maid service claim after canceling your insurance, it won’t be covered unless your policy remains active for a certain period and the incident happened during that time. Insurance only offers protection while your policy is active, so continuous coverage ensures you’re always protected.
