Insurance Built for Wedding & Event Planners
Planning, coordinating, and running events isn’t just hard work — it’s risky business, too. Liability insurance for wedding and event planners is designed to protect you from the cost of various claims, granting you peace of mind to focus on the big day.
- If your advice, scheduling, or decisions result in a financial loss for your client:
Professional liability insurance can help cover your legal expenses - If you damage the venue while setting up at a wedding:
General liability insurance is designed to help cover property repairs - If your work laptop is stolen and you can’t access your scheduling program or client info:
Tools and equipment coverage can help replace your stolen gear - You fall victim to a data breach, and your client’s payment information is exposed:
Cyber liability insurance can help cover credit monitoring and legal fees if you’re sued
What Is Event & Wedding Planner Insurance?
Insurance for event and wedding planners is designed to provide you with financial protection from professional errors, like double-booking clients or overlooking permits, as well as third-party injuries and property damage.
Many venues and clients require you to carry liability insurance to prove you are financially prepared for claims and lawsuits.
Insurance for Event Planners vs. Wedding Insurance for Couples
Wedding planner liability insurance is not the same as the type of event insurance couples purchase for their own weddings.
Couples often purchase special event host insurance to protect themselves, not their event planner. It can financially protect them if a vendor doesn’t show up to their wedding, or reimburse costs if their event is canceled or postponed.
How Much Does It Cost?
Event and wedding planner insurance costs as low as $21 a month from Insurance Canopy — one of the lowest rates on the market.
Want to save even more? Opt for an annual payment plan instead. Paying up front for the year saves you up to 14% on your premium versus monthly payments.
Factors that determine the final price of your premium include:
- What types of coverage you need
- The size of your business
- Your claims history
- The coverage limits you choose
- Whether you opt for monthly or annual payments

Get the professional protection you need to plan your clients’ biggest moments with confidence.
With coverage that’s tailored for your business and your budget, Insurance Canopy’s event and wedding planner insurance helps you stay protected and focused on the details.
What Does Event & Wedding Planner Insurance Include?
Your policy includes the essential coverages every event or wedding planner needs, with the option to customize and expand your protection with optional add-ons.
You may have heard this coverage referred to as errors and omissions (E&O) or professional indemnity insurance. It’s designed to cover your legal expenses if you’re sued over your work performance, such as failing to plan an event on time.
Professional liability gives you the freedom to do business without worrying about lawsuits if you make a mistake, are accused of negligence, or fail to deliver services.
General liability is sometimes called slip-and-fall insurance because it covers other people’s medical expenses if they’re injured because of your business. However, it can also cover repairs, replacements, or legal expenses if you damage someone else’s property.
In many cases, venues require proof of general liability insurance before allowing you to host an event on their property.
When you add a venue or individual to your policy as an additional insured, your policy’s coverage extends to them. This protects them from claims related to your business activities, which is why many venues require you to add them to your policy.
Otherwise, they could face financial fallout for your mistakes, which can put unnecessary strain on your professional relationship with them and lead to more lawsuits.
As you grow and scale your wedding or event planning business, you may need higher limits to properly cover your assets and liabilities. With Insurance Canopy, you can raise your policy’s general and professional liability limits from $1,000,000 per claim / $2,000,000 aggregate to a $3,000,000 aggregate limit.
An aggregate limit is the maximum amount of money your policy will pay out in a single policy period.
Tools and equipment insurance is a must-have to protect your mobile business gear, such as laptops, tablets, and sound systems.
If any of your gear is stolen or broken, it isn’t just expensive to replace. It can also cause you to miss deadlines, cancel meetings, and generally disrupt your business. Tools and equipment insurance is there to cover the cost of repairing or replacing your equipment to minimize these effects.
Cybercrimes like data breaches and phishing scams are only becoming more common. Unfortunately, they can be extremely costly for your business.
Cyber liability insurance helps you weather a cyber attack by covering the expenses you face in the fallout, paying for both first- and third-party expenses.
If you have employees, a fidelity bond is a smart investment. It’s a type of surety bond that offers financial compensation to your client if one of your employees steals from them, forges documents, or embezzles funds.
A client may even require you to purchase a fidelity bond before they will work with you.
Workers compensation insurance for event and wedding planners covers the cost of benefits required by your state for your employees’ work-related injuries and illnesses.
All states except Texas require employers to purchase workers compensation insurance because these benefits are costly, often as soon as you hire your first employee. Knowing your employees will be financially taken care of in the event of an illness or injury gives you priceless peace of mind.
Most personal auto policies don’t cover accidents or damage to your vehicle related to your business activities. Only commercial auto insurance can cover those expenses.
Even if you use your personal vehicle for work, commercial auto coverage is a must-have. It’s designed to protect you from the financial damages you could face from work-related driving. Plus, it’s legally required for businesses in most states.
When it comes to planning events, every detail matters and every risk can impact the experience. That’s why event and wedding planners choose Insurance Canopy for peace of mind and reliable protection.

FAQs About Event & Wedding Planner Insurance
Do I need both general and professional liability as a wedding planner?
Yes. General and professional liability insurance cover some of the most common claims wedding and event planners face, which is why we include both coverages in our base policy.
How quickly can I add a venue as an additional insured and get a COI?
You can add additional insureds during the checkout process, so the venue is already listed on your policy by the time you purchase. Add more venues and individuals from your online account at any time afterward.
Additionally, your COI is immediately available to download from your online account once you buy your policy.
Can I buy one-day coverage for a single wedding?
Yes — if you only need coverage for one day, you can purchase short-term event insurance for weddings. This policy is best-suited for couples and individuals who do not professionally plan and organize weddings.
Learn more by reading our Event Insurance FAQ guide.
Does this cover subcontracted vendors or assistants?
Event planner insurance does not cover independent contractors or vendors — it is designed to protect you, the planner. Insurance Canopy offers vendor insurance for professionals ranging from photographers and videographers to wedding DJs and entertainers.
If alcohol is served, do I need liquor liability insurance?
If you are directly providing or selling alcohol at your event, you need liquor liability insurance. Please note that this is not the same as host liquor insurance, which is temporary coverage for event hosts who do not make money from selling or serving alcohol.
However, if you or your client hire a caterer or wedding bartender to provide and/or serve alcohol, that vendor should have their own liquor liability coverage. Ask them to add you to their policy as an additional insured to protect you from being held responsible for their alcohol-related claims.
Am I covered at multiple venues and across state lines?
Yes! Our event planner insurance goes where you do, so you’re protected when you host events at multiple venues or in neighboring states.
Still have questions regarding our policies? Feel free to reach out to our licensed insurance agents. We are available Monday through Friday from 8am–8pm ET.

If alcohol is part of a wedding, the host typically needs liquor-related coverage;

Not every wedding venue requires insurance, but many rentable event spaces require couples
