What Is Musician Liability Insurance?
Musician liability insurance is general liability business insurance built for musicians and performers. It’s designed to protect you from the costs of third-party injury and property damage claims tied to your performance, setup, or teardown.
For example, if a wedding guest trips over your equipment and gets hurt, or your setup damages the venue’s floor, musician insurance can help cover the costs.
Our policies cover you (nearly) everywhere you perform, including:
- Weddings
- Festivals
- Fairs
- Parties
- Farmers markets
- Corporate events
- Recording studio sessions
- Live music gigs at bars and restaurants
Pro Tip: In addition to insurance for solo artists, Insurance Canopy also offers band coverage.
Why Do Musicians Need Insurance?
Most musicians need insurance because a venue, client, or event coordinator asks for it — often as the last box to check before a gig is confirmed. Proof of coverage (and being added as an additional insured) is a standard booking requirement at everything from wedding venues to festivals to your local brewery.
Having a policy ready means you can say yes to those bookings on the spot instead of scrambling. It also covers the everyday what-ifs of live performance: a guest trips over a cable, your gear nicks the venue’s wall, someone claims your setup damaged their property. Accidents like these are rare, but when one happens, your policy handles the cost instead of your bank account.
You may even need your own entertainer insurance to play with an orchestra or ensemble. Wherever and however you perform, Insurance Canopy makes it easy to protect your music business.
How Much Does Liability Insurance for Musicians Cost?
Annual musician policies with 365 days of coverage start at just $18.50 per month or $199 annually. Single event policies cost $59 per event and include up to three consecutive days of coverage.

FAQs About Musician Insurance
What Type of Insurance Should a Musician Have?
Musicians need at least general liability because it provides financial protection for the most common types of claims, including:
- Third-party bodily injuries, like a guest’s or audience member’s trip-and-fall accident
- Property damage, like scuffs on stages or floors from your equipment
- Personal and advertising injury, like using an audience member in your ads without their permission.
What’s Covered Under a Musicians’ Insurance Policy?
All Insurance Canopy musician policies include general liability insurance, which covers third-party injury and property damage claims. For example:
- An audience member gets hurt by a speaker that falls off the stage during one of your shows.
- While moving your keyboard into a venue, it bumps against the wall, leaving a large hole. The venue holds you responsible for repair costs.
- One of the employees at the venue trips over your amp and injures themselves. They sue you to pay their medical fees.
You can further customize your annual policy coverage with add-ons that extend your protection.
Both annual and event policies allow you to list clients, venues, property owners, and similar entities as additional insureds if they request it.
Can I Insure My Musical Instruments?
Absolutely! You can add Gear and Equipment Coverage (inland marine) to annual musician insurance policies. This optional add-on extends insurance coverage to your musical instruments and other gear in case of damage or theft.
Add this coverage to your policy during the application process. Or, if you already have an Insurance Canopy policy, simply log in to your online dashboard to add gear and equipment coverage. There are two tiers to choose from:
- $2,000 coverage per policy year (+$7.50 per month)
- $5,000 coverage per policy year (+$15.00 per month)
What Is an Additional Insured and How Do I Add One?
An additional insured is usually a venue owner or event organizer who is added to your policy so they’re also covered by your insurance. If someone files a claim against you and names the event or venue alongside you, they have coverage under your policy, too.
You can add one additional insured for $5 or an unlimited number for $10 during the checkout process or any time after, right from your online dashboard.
What Is a Certificate of Insurance (COI) for Musicians?
A certificate of insurance (COI) is a document from your insurance company that verifies you have coverage. It provides proof of insurance, outlining your policy limits and listing all third parties named as additional insureds.
Many event coordinators and venues require you to provide a COI before you can sign a contract or book gigs.
When Can I Receive a Certificate of Insurance?
You can download your COI immediately after adding an additional insured to your policy. Just click “Proof of Insurance” on your online dashboard to view and download your documents.
Are Wedding Musicians Covered Under Musicians Insurance?
Yes! You’re covered under our musicians’ insurance policy if you perform at weddings. If you play more than a few weddings a year, we recommend purchasing an annual policy to protect all your gigs for less.
Are you a wedding DJ? Purchase DJ insurance coverage instead.
What if a Claim Is Filed After My Policy Ends?
You’re still covered, as long as the incident happened while your policy was active. That’s called occurrence-form coverage — it goes by when the accident occurred, not when the claim gets filed. So if a guest trips at a gig this summer but doesn’t sue until next year, your policy still has your back.
Still have questions regarding our policies? Feel free to reach out to our licensed insurance agents. We are available Monday through Friday from 8am–8pm ET.
