What Is Band Insurance?
Band insurance is designed to protect you from the costs of liability claims and lawsuits related to your performances, advertisements, and more. It acts as a financial safety net in the event of accidental injuries or property damage involving your audience, venue, or merch.
For example, imagine an audience member trips over one of your extension cords and breaks a wrist, or you accidentally scratch a venue’s wall while setting up your amps.
Band liability insurance can also help pay defense costs if you’re accused of copyright infringement or defamation.
Why Should You Carry Band Insurance?
You can’t predict when something will go wrong, and you’re never too “small-time” to avoid liability claims. Additional reasons to make sure your band has entertainer insurance coverage:
- Venues and event organizers often require you to show proof of insurance before hiring you or allowing you to perform on their property
- Venues or club owners may require you to add them as an additional insured on your policy

How Much Is Band Liability Insurance?
Annual policies start at $199 per year, or $18.50 per month. Our policies cover groups up to 10 members. Premiums may vary depending on the number of members in your band, but regardless if you have three members or 10, it’s still less than $15 per month per person!
Annual policies also allow you to add optional coverages including:
- Equipment and gear coverage (also known as inland marine) from +$7.50/month
- Cyber liability coverage for +$8.25/month
- Additional insureds (unlimited) +$10
Band event insurance policies cost $59 per month and cover up to three days. Equipment and cyber coverages are not available on event policies. However, you can still add unlimited additional insureds to your event policy for just $10.

What Kind of Insurance Does a Band Need?
All music groups need general liability insurance to cover claims related to injuries and property damage to others — like audience members and venues.
Bands should also have:
- Personal and advertising injury coverage for claims like defamation or copyright infringement
- Damage to premises rented to you coverage for accidental damages to recording studios or rehearsal spaces you may use
- Medical expenses coverage for injuries that occur during your performances, regardless of who’s at fault
What Scenarios Could Band Insurance Cover?
Here are some examples of the kinds of claims band insurance can cover:
- Someone trips over your electrical cord, breaks their wrist, and sues you to cover their medical bills
- You accidentally bump into decor at a small dive bar during a show and break it
- Another local artist accuses you of stealing their promo materials
- One of the branded guitar straps you sold at a show snaps the first time a fan tries using it, causing them to drop and crack their instrument
- A venue accuses you of slander after you talked about the owner during a set at another location

Does a Band Need a COI?
Most venues and event organizers will require you to show a Certificate of Insurance (COI) to prove you have current liability insurance. You also may need to provide your COI as proof that you’ve added the venue as an additional insured on your policy.

Does Band Insurance Cover Musical Equipment?
Annual band policies with Insurance Canopy allow you to add gear and equipment coverage for your instruments and other essentials. It is not available on event policies.
Equipment insurance options include:
- Up to $2,000 per policy year (+ $7.50/month)
- Up to $5,000 per policy year (+$15/month)
Are There Any Exclusions or Limitations in Band Liability Insurance Policies?
