DJ Insurance Cost

Is the cost of DJ insurance worth it? From maintaining your gear to gassing up your car between gigs, the expenses add up before the music even starts. That’s why Insurance Canopy offers no-nonsense, comprehensive DJ insurance that won’t break the bank (but might just save your set).

How Much Does DJ Liability Insurance Cost?

With Insurance Canopy, DJ liability insurance starts at just $18.50/month for annual coverage and $59/event for three-day coverage. You can also add DJ gear and equipment coverage (aka Inland Marine) to your annual policy for $7.50-$15 per month, depending on the coverage you select.

Most DJs pay $20 to $30 monthly for annual coverage. To see how those prices compare to other DJ insurance options, see our DJ and musician insurance comparison guide.

Insurance Canopy’s base entertainer insurance policy includes coverages that can help protect you from common claims, like guest trip and fall injuries, scratched venue floors, and fires from overheated equipment:

We know DJs’ needs vary, so some of our coverages are optional to ensure you only pay for what you might use. Many of our policyholders choose to add one or more of these coverages to their policy:

What Types of Payment Plans Are Available?

Insurance Canopy keeps payment flexible with monthly, annual, or event-based payments to fit your calendar and budget.

  • Monthly payments are good for lower prices now. Rather than paying your premium all at once, you can pay it in installments. Month-to-month coverage could also make sense if you’re mostly busy during event season and take time off during slow months. There is a small $2.58 fee each month if you choose monthly payments.
  • Annual payments are good for saving money over time. If you know you need coverage year-round, paying upfront with an annual plan saves you about 10% over the year. That translates to a decent pair of cables, a few rolls of gaffer tape, or a meal between sets.
  • Event policies are good if you only work a few gigs a year. If you work three or fewer sets a year, buying a DJ event policy, starting at $59 per gig, could make financial sense. Keep in mind, event policies don’t offer the option to add equipment coverage to help protect your gear.

How Much Does Each Type of Coverage Cost?

General Liability: $18.50 a Month or $199 a Year (Higher Limits Available)

This coverage can protect you from paying for injuries or property damage to a third party (like an injured guest or a venue owner) caused by your DJ services.

Insurance Canopy general liability performers insurance coverage includes the following coverages:

Our DJ insurance comes with $1 million per occurrence and $2 million per year aggregate limit of general liability coverage, with a limit of $300,000 for Damage to Premises Rented to You (per premise).

Need higher limits? We offer an optional higher $3 million aggregate limit starting at +$100/year or a $4 million aggregate limit starting at +$200/year.

DJ Equipment Insurance: +$7.50/Month or $15/Month

This optional coverage can pay to repair or replace damaged or stolen equipment. It’s designed to keep your show going if someone spills a drink on your laptop, knocks over your speakers, or breaks into your car and steals your gear. +$7.50 per month provides $2,000 in annual coverage, and $15 per month provides $5,000 in annual coverage.

Cyber Liability: +$6.58/Month (Higher Limits Available)

Cyber attacks, including phishing, ransomware, and data breaches, happen more often than you think. If you store client data, like payment methods or contact info, cyber liability insurance can shield you from paying out-of-pocket to recover stolen data, alert impacted clients, or defend yourself if a data breach escalates to a lawsuit.

Additional Insureds: Included

An additional insured is a person or business that requests to be added to your policy for coverage. This might be a venue or an event organizer who hires you. An additional insured on your policy gets shielded from paying out for claims if you make a mistake. Unlimited additional insureds are included at no additional cost with an annual policy and for $5 more if desired with an event policy.

What Factors Affect DJ Liability Insurance Cost?

Gross Annual Income

The higher your yearly income before taxes, the higher limits you need to properly shield those finances. This can increase the cost of your insurance premium.

Optional Coverages

Customizing your policy to fit your needs with higher general liability limits, DJ equipment coverage, or data theft protection increases your total price.

Claims History

If you have filed claims in the past, your insurance cost may be higher than if you did not have a history of filing claims.

Here’s a breakdown of how your gross annual income affects your insurance costs:

DJ Liability Insurance Base Cost by Income

Gross Annual Income Base Monthly General Liability Premium
$0 – $50,000
$18.50
$50,001+
$24.33

Can I Reduce the Cost of My Insurance?

Choosing an annual plan over monthly payments is one good way to manage your DJ insurance cost. Another strategy is to be aware of risks at performances and set safety precautions to avoid common pitfalls.

Try these risk management strategies for DJs:

  • Ask clients or venues to sign written contracts and liability waivers that outline your terms of service, payment policies, cancellation policies, and expectations
  • When working outdoor gigs, be ready for weather: an unexpected storm can damage your electronic equipment and send tents and speakers sailing into the audience
  • Tape down cables, and secure speakers and other equipment from areas with high foot traffic
  • Never leave gear unattended: a parked car full of electronics is a magnet for thieves

Staying on guard against risk lowers the chance that you’ll need to file a claim. A history of filing claims can increase your premium, so maintaining a clean claims history (as much as possible) minimizes your insurance costs, too.

FAQs About DJ Insurance Costs

Insurance Canopy’s DJ liability insurance is designed to cover claims of third-party injuries, property damage, false advertising, slander, and more. Optional add-ons include additional insureds, gear and equipment coverage, and data breach insurance (cyber liability).

Yes, many venues and event organizers require a Certificate of Insurance (COI) as proof that you carry liability insurance. You can log into your Insurance Canopy dashboard, find your existing policy, and print your COI in seconds.

Insurance Canopy offers DJ liability insurance starting at $18.50 per month or $199 per year. If you only need coverage for one gig, our event policy starts at $59 for three consecutive days of coverage.

The main difference between annual and event DJ insurance is that an event policy covers you for a one- to three-day event, while an annual policy protects you all year long. Plus, with an annual DJ insurance policy, you have the option to add gear and equipment coverage for a small additional fee.

Both policies offer the same amount of general liability insurance coverage, and each caters to your specific needs.

DJs need liability coverage because common insurance claims, like partygoers tripping over cables, speakers falling into crowds, and venue damage (plus the lawsuits that can arise with those claims), can cost tens of thousands of dollars. DJ insurance is designed to protect against costly third-party claims that can pull the plug on your business.
